📋 Description
• Assess Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support in accordance with legislation, case law, council practices, procedures, accuracy standards, and agreed clearance times • Handle customer enquiries by telephone, in person, or on visits as required • Support colleagues and partners in prioritising customer needs and providing excellent customer care • Process all work allocated by Benefit Team Leaders according to performance indicators and office procedures • Assess all types of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit applications, including student, self-employed, and various-tenure applications • Calculate overpayments and underlying entitlement, investigate complaints initially, and verify claims • Maintain accurate customer records using the Council’s online computer systems and comply with data protection, freedom of information, and security standards • Advise customers and promote uptake of Housing and Council Tax Benefits and other welfare benefits • Identify, calculate, notify, and recover overpaid benefits and classify overpayments for subsidy purposes • Provide support, training, or mentoring to colleagues and partners • Conduct quality-control exercises by checking colleagues’ work, identifying errors, and reporting results to the Benefits Team Leader • Conduct home visits, with a colleague if necessary, for benefit-related enquiries • Handle telephone enquiries and assist One-Stop-Shop employees with complex issues; conduct customer interviews where appropriate • Work with Council Tax Billing, Recovery, and Fraud sections • Liaise with DWP offices, the Rent Officer Service, Housing Associations, and private landlords on individual cases • Keep up to date with new legislation • Comply with Health and Safety legislation and the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy • Provide customer service and process Housing Benefit claims at frontline and alternative venues as required • Identify and refer potential fraud cases to the Fraud Team and liaise with investigators

• Recent experience in the role • Fully competent in all aspects of assessing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support • Highly competent user of Capita One (Academy) software
