📋 Description
• Assess Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support in accordance with legislation, case law, council procedures, accuracy standards and agreed clearance times • Process work allocated by Benefit Team Leaders according to performance indicators and office procedures • Assess all types of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit applications, including student, self-employed, tenure, overpayment and underlying-entitlement cases • Investigate complaints initially and verify claims to agreed standards • Maintain accurate customer records using the Council’s online computer systems while complying with data protection, freedom of information and security standards • Advise customers, promote uptake of housing, council tax and welfare benefits, and ensure customers receive entitled benefits and additional income • Identify and initiate recovery of overpaid benefits and classify overpayments for subsidy purposes • Provide support, training and mentoring to colleagues and partners • Conduct quality-control checks, identify discrepancies and errors, and report results to the Benefits Team Leader • Conduct home visits to address benefit-related enquiries • Handle telephone enquiries and assist One-Stop-Shop employees with complex issues; conduct customer interviews when appropriate • Work with Council Tax Billing, Recovery and Fraud sections • Liaise with DWP offices, the Rent Officer Service, housing associations and private landlords • Keep up to date with new legislation • Process Housing Benefit claims at frontline and alternative venues as required • Refer potential fraud cases to the Fraud Team and liaise with investigators
🎯 Requirements
• Recent experience in the Benefits Assessor role • Fully competent in all aspects of assessing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support • Highly competent user of MRI (Academy) software
