📋 Description

• Serve as principal legal advisor to Empower’s defined benefit and multiemployer (Taft-Hartley) business • Provide legal counsel on complex ERISA, tax, fiduciary, operational, administrative, compliance, and regulatory matters • Support day-to-day business operations and strategic growth, including product enhancements, operational improvements, strategic initiatives, and client solutions • Advise on development, enhancement, qualification, design, administration, funding, and termination of retirement and employee benefit plans • Provide legal guidance on recordkeeping, trust and custody services, administrative services, participant services, investment-related offerings, and escalated client concerns • Support health and welfare plans, consumer-directed healthcare arrangements, HSAs, HRAs, and FSAs • Advise on defined contribution plans, IRAs, rollover solutions, and other retirement products and services • Advise on operational and fiduciary corrections, including IRS EPCRS and Department of Labor correction programs • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and industry developments and translate requirements into practical business guidance • Support negotiations involving retirement plan services, recordkeeping, trust, custody, administrative services, investment products, and commercial arrangements • Partner with Product, Operations, Client Service, Sales, Investments, Compliance, Risk Management, Marketing, Finance, Technology, and other functions • Develop legal frameworks, governance processes, and compliance practices • Lead complex cross-functional initiatives and influence decision-making across a matrixed organization • Foster practical, business-oriented legal advice and balance legal, regulatory, operational, and business risks

🎯 Requirements

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school • Active license to practice law • 12+ years of relevant legal experience • Recognized expertise advising on defined benefit plans and multiemployer (Taft-Hartley) plans • Experience with plan qualification, funding, administration, fiduciary matters, operational compliance, correction programs, and related ERISA and tax issues • Experience advising on health and welfare plans and applicable employee benefits laws • Experience advising on defined contribution plans, IRAs, and other retirement savings products • Knowledge of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, IRS and Department of Labor guidance, and other laws governing retirement and employee benefit plans • Ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical, business-focused advice • Experience partnering with business leaders and influencing decisions across multiple business functions • Strong judgment and ability to navigate complex legal and business issues • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; employment visa sponsorship is unavailable, including CPT/OPT • Reliable high-speed internet with a wired connection and a suitable home workspace for remote work
