📋 Description

• Production-edit approximately 35 to 40 books per year, or 15 to 25 books at a time • Manage the production editorial process from manuscript assessment through proofreading, indexing, and checking text, photo inserts, and jackets/covers • Handle production editorial work for original fiction and nonfiction titles from manuscript to bound book, including paperback conversions • Electronically style manuscripts for design and composition • Hire freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, and review their work through all passes • Clean and prepare copyedited, author-reviewed manuscripts for design and typesetting • Collate author and freelancer changes in page proofs and resolve queries before transmittal • Copyedit jacket/cover copy and ancillary marketing materials, and proofread jackets/covers, insert captions, and additional material • Collaborate with Production, Design, and Editorial departments on scheduling, editorial revisions, and Legal directives • Update project progress in digital tracking systems using file-naming conventions and documented best practices • Provide task- and project-specific support for other production editors during absences

🎯 Requirements

• Extensive background in adult trade fiction and nonfiction • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • Ability to anticipate problems, troubleshoot solutions, and prioritize • Strong working knowledge of grammar and punctuation • Expertise with the Chicago Manual of Style • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to work under pressure • Good oral and verbal communication • Ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects • Tactful collaboration, common sense, and initiative • Seven to ten years’ experience as a production editor, preferably in adult trade fiction/nonfiction • High-level copyediting and proofreading experience • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat including PDF markup tools, and Workflow/Metadata systems • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
