📋 Description

• Lead an established team of 8 to 10 software engineers within the JRE software development organization • Own engineers’ reviews, development, day-to-day leadership, and career growth • Hold one-on-ones, create development plans, provide feedback, manage performance, and sponsor future leads and senior technical contributors • Build trust, psychological safety, inclusion, sustainable workload practices, and effective distributed-team norms • Own the team’s ability to execute on priorities and sprint plans, including staffing, skill coverage, workflow, code review, test automation, CI/CD, definition of done, and release readiness • Partner with product management and the product owner on capacity, staffing risk, sprint planning, and delivery • Surface technical debt, modernization needs, schedule risks, staffing risks, and technical risks • Remove impediments and organizational friction; participate in incident reviews and blameless post-mortems • Communicate leadership context to the team and report the team’s work, concerns, and needs to the manager • Collaborate with architects, product management, systems engineering, program management, quality, security, and government stakeholders • Facilitate contentious conversations and resolve interpersonal and cross-team conflict • Hire, interview, evaluate, onboard, and help shape team composition and structure

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, with 9+ years of relevant experience; 7+ years for a Master’s; or 4+ years for a Doctorate; relevant experience considered in lieu of degree • 3+ years of direct people management or formal team leadership of software engineers • Must be a U.S. citizen • Must be able to obtain a Secret clearance or higher after start • Experience directly managing software engineers, including performance reviews, career development, difficult performance conversations, and personnel matters • Experience managing distributed or fully remote engineering teams across multiple time zones • Experience managing engineers within a larger engineering organization alongside architecture, product, and systems engineering • Ability to sustain trust, accountability, high standards, and candid feedback • Skill facilitating and resolving high-stakes conversations and competing interests • Experience leading software teams delivering complex, mission-critical, or high-reliability systems • Experience partnering with product management or a product owner on capacity, staffing, and delivery risk • Professional software engineering background with design-discussion, technical trade-off, risk, technical-debt, and throughput expertise • Fluency with version control workflows, code review, test automation, CI/CD, and agile iterative delivery • Familiarity with distributed systems, secure development practices, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operability • Desired: defense/DoD program environment, FAR, DISA STIGs, NIST SP 800-171, Java/JVM languages, modernization or refactoring, leadership training or coaching credentials, and engineering leadership community contributions
