• Manage approximately 12 engineers across three product teams through regular 1:1s, coaching and clear feedback • Clarify expectations and define effective performance standards • Identify performance issues early and handle difficult conversations appropriately • Support engineers progressing from junior through senior and beyond • Own the engineering performance and progression approach • Review and improve career levels, expectations and review processes • Make consistent, evidence-based promotion and progression decisions • Foster continuous feedback throughout the year • Own engineering hiring with Tech Leads and the wider team • Define hiring needs, assess candidates and maintain a high hiring bar • Ensure structured and useful onboarding for new engineers • Plan team composition, capability development and future hiring needs • Monitor engagement, retention, collaboration and emerging people issues • Partner with Tech Leads on issues involving technical delivery, behaviour and team dynamics • Maintain a strong remote engineering culture • Stay close enough to engineering work to understand the team’s problems and environment • Read code, follow pull requests and participate intelligently in technical conversations • Partner with Tech Leads without competing for technical ownership • Work closely with the Head of Engineering with support from People and meaningful autonomy
• Experienced Engineering Manager; not a first step into management • Previous experience directly managing software engineers across more than one team or product area • Strong track record of developing engineers at different career stages • Hands-on experience managing performance, including difficult or underperformance situations • Experience making promotion and progression decisions • Experience running or improving engineering career frameworks, review cycles or progression processes • Previous experience hiring software engineers and building effective interview processes • Engineering background sufficient to understand code and contribute meaningfully to technical conversations • Judgement to know when to get involved and when to leave technical decisions with Tech Leads • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in a remote environment • Practical understanding of how AI tools are changing software engineering and experience using them in your own work • Experience with Ruby or Rails would be useful, but is not essential • Must be authorised to live and work in the UK
