Beschreibung

• Advise Station Management on marine-oriented concerns and all aspects of Marine Operations • Oversee and assist with operating and maintaining approximately fifteen active small boats, reserve vessels, inflatable boats, outboard motors, inboard diesel systems, hydraulics, and rigid hull inflatables • Operate vehicles and equipment to launch and recover boats via trailer • Maintain inventory and tracking of spare parts • Design and implement marine safety training for station personnel, covering seamanship, navigation, radio protocol, boat handling, float plans, rough-weather and sea-ice operations, vessel safety, cold-water survival, oceanographic systems, trailering, and remote operations • Lead the Ocean Search and Rescue team and conduct and document monthly drills and training • Maintain daily operational records, including vessel logs, situation reports, fuel usage, maintenance, launch/recovery, and turnover reports • Prepare and maintain Palmer Station boating documentation, including JHAs and Standard Operating Procedures • Maintain extensive spares inventory to support the scientific program • Recommend equipment and supply needs or problems to the Marine Technical Services Manager or designee • Provide off-ice TDY planning and expertise regarding the small boat fleet when needed • Inspect safety, lifesaving, firefighting, and emergency equipment • Maintain safety and cleanliness of shop areas • Participate in station community programs, including chores, cleanup, recycling, and community meetings • Perform heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity indoors and outdoors • Perform other duties as required

🎯 Anforderungen

• NSF security clearance required for consideration • Public Trust security clearance required prior to start date • U.S. Citizenship required • USCG Captain’s OUVP license required • Minimum six (6+) years of experience acting as a vessel Captain, or in a senior engineering/systems design role • Two (2+) of those six years must involve maintaining small vessel systems and hulls, or equivalent • Experience in commercial marine operations such as merchant marine, fisheries, or boatyards • Experience with coastal navigation, electronic navigation, and dead reckoning • Experience training others in small vessel operation • Leadership experience in vessel scheduling, maintenance, and operation • Comprehensive knowledge of small vessel operation, trailering, troubleshooting, and maintenance • Ability to repair and troubleshoot engines and machinery, including 4-stroke outboards, diesel, and inflatables • Ability to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum • Ability to perform heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, and outdoor work in extreme cold • Must participate in community programs, including chores, cleanup, recycling, and safety objectives • Must complete NSF-required physical and dental examinations for Antarctic deployment • Valid driver’s license issued in the United States • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for approximately six months starting in Fall 2026
