📋 Description

• Define, implement, and maintain security baselines for cloud and Linux platforms • Own security controls across AWS and Google Cloud, including account/project structure, guardrails, logging, and preventative/detective controls • Design and enforce least-privilege access across cloud, Linux, and internal engineering services • Own machine image security pipelines, vulnerability scanning, patch currency, automated testing, versioned releases, and rollback • Manage identity, access, secrets, and certificate lifecycles • Translate security requirements into continuous automated compliance checks • Build resource inventories, automate control evidence, report exceptions, and drive findings to systemic fixes • Define service health indicators and service-level objectives • Engineer automated recovery and self-healing capabilities • Own backups, restoration, and disaster recovery procedures • Lead availability and security incident response, communication, containment, follow-up, and blameless post-incident reviews • Own observability architecture, including metrics, logs, retention, access, AWS Managed Grafana dashboards, and actionable alerting • Design and operate secure networking, including segmentation, DNS, TLS, routing, firewalls, VPN, and zero-trust connectivity • Lead legacy cloud workload migration and retirement/consolidation of unsupported or duplicative services • Own cloud and high-performance computing cost visibility, attribution, budgets, spend alerting, and resource guardrails • Write, test, and maintain platform and security automation in Python or another general-purpose language • Lead infrastructure and code reviews; mentor engineers and promote shared ownership • Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions and favor simple, maintainable, standard technologies • Collaborate with nuclear and non-software engineers to explain security requirements in practical terms • Travel up to 5% for workshops and project assistance

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience • 5+ years of relevant experience in platform, infrastructure, cloud, security, site reliability engineering, or a related field • Experience designing, securing, and operating production cloud infrastructure • Strong AWS experience • Strong Linux systems experience, including administration, hardening, and troubleshooting • Experience with infrastructure automation, including infrastructure as code, configuration management, and programming or scripting • Experience implementing platform security controls across access management, network security, secrets management, vulnerability management, and security monitoring • Experience designing and operating monitoring, recovery, and incident-response capabilities for production systems • Ability to design maintainable infrastructure and make sound technical tradeoffs involving security, reliability, performance, cost, and complexity • Knowledge of networking fundamentals: DNS, TLS, routing, firewalls, segmentation, and remote access • Knowledge of platform security principles, including least-privilege access, identity and access management, secrets management, vulnerability management, and defense-in-depth • Ability to translate security, reliability, and operational requirements into practical, automated technical controls • Ability to use monitoring, logging, metrics, and service health indicators to identify, diagnose, and improve security and reliability issues • Ability to assess technical risk, prioritize remediation, and drive issues to sustainable resolution • Ability to work with a highly collaborative team • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge • Ability to exercise architectural judgment and favor simple designs • Ability to weigh security risk against engineering cost and explain tradeoffs • Ability to communicate clearly during incidents and keep stakeholders informed • Ability to take operational ownership through testing, documentation, and retirement • Excellent written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences • Must be authorized by the Department of Energy to access Part 810-controlled information • Occasionally requires working weekends, schedule flexibility, and extended hours • Desired: Google Cloud, cloud cost management, high-performance computing security, container security, self-hosted engineering services, vulnerability management, control-evidence automation, scientific or engineering computing support, and an advanced degree
