• Model Optimization: Design and execute rigorous statistical validation methodologies to calibrate and validate operational warning applications, tools, and/or models. • Collaboration: Work in close collaboration with the NHC Science and Mission Integration Division (SMID) staff and external research collaborators. • Software Design: Design and evaluate software systems and processes specifically tailored to meet rigorous operational requirements. • Research to Operations: Help with Research-to-Operations (R2O) pipelines for designated downstream model applications. • Data Visualization: Leverage web development and data visualization tools like Python, GIS, and JavaScript to represent complex meteorological datasets. • Technical Adaptability: Swiftly adapt to rapidly evolving software environments, analytical workflows, and modeling technologies.
• Independent Problem-Solving: Candidates must be able to work independently, take initiative, and troubleshoot complex software systems or analytical workflows with minimal supervision. • Computer Languages: Proficiency in scientific programming, particularly Python and Unix Shell scripting languages. • Statistics Analysis: Proficiency in statistical analysis and methods. • Development Methodologies: Strong knowledge of the software development life cycle, such as Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. • Analytical Skills: Robust problem-solving and analytical skills with a proven ability to troubleshoot complex, high-consequence software systems. • Data Management: Experience with the reading, management, and display of large gridded datasets and other types of meteorological data, including surface observations. • The Ideal Scientific Applications Developer will have the following: • Computer Languages: Knowledge of additional computer languages including javascript, FORTRAN • Data Formats: Knowledge of common meteorological data formats including Grib(1,2), Zarr, NetCDF, BUFR, GIS formats (geojson, shapefiles, KML) • Version Control: Hands-on experience with collaborative software development and source code management using Git and GitHub. • Coding Best Practices: Knowledge of AI coding workflows [e.g. copilot], including the responsible use of agentic AI for scientific applications. • Cloud Computing: Experience optimizing code/applications for cloud computing • Tropical Meteorology: Knowledge of tropical meteorology and hazards, especially tropical cyclones
