• Manage reporters in the afternoons • Supervise evening copy/newsletters • Write compelling headlines • Manage project budgets • Negotiate freelance contractor agreements • Manage the editorial calendar, ensuring deadlines are met and quality is maintained • Help design and implement CNO’s project work • Fill in for the Editor-in-Chief during vacations and sick days • Find compelling visuals and improve photography/photo editing tools • Package stories for social media • Provide vacation relief for editors and the newsletter editor • Recruit, hire and manage journalists and editors
• Minimum 7 years of experience in journalism • Strong understanding of politics, climate change and disinformation • Excellent editorial skills with a track record of impactful storytelling • Experience in a leadership or management role • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage deadlines • Strong headline writing, story packaging and copy editing skills • Ability to navigate a fast-paced work environment with flexibility, professionalism and kindness • Resume, cover letter and three writing samples required • Applicants must read Canada’s National Observer, explore the site, sign up for newsletters, subscribe for a month, sign up for Civic Searchlight and use it before applying
