• Assist with major litigation files • Assume carriage of small to mid-size litigation and negotiation files • Develop and execute legal and litigation strategies • Conduct legal research • Draft correspondence, affidavits, pleadings, applications, and legislation for Indigenous governments • Implement or coordinate agreements with governments • Interview witnesses, prepare evidence, and prepare for discovery • Appear before courts and tribunals, including arguing applications and portions of oral submissions • Facilitate community sessions on law-making and Elders' and knowledge keeper deliberations • Prepare for trials, including developing questions and statements and appearing at all levels of court • Support self-government, jurisdictional, and exploratory negotiations • Manage client files • Work primarily on Aboriginal law, including Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, consultation and accommodation, reserve and Aboriginal title lands, Indigenous self-determination and jurisdiction • Potentially handle regulatory proceedings and constitutional, administrative, and municipal law matters
• Over 4–7 years of litigation experience • Experience in various levels of court • Strong advocacy and oral and written communication skills • Excellent analytical, interpretive, research, and drafting skills • Proven negotiation skills • Ability to work independently • Familiarity with civil procedures • Proficiency in building relationships and working well in a team environment • Eligible to practice law in Ontario as a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario • Asset: Experience working for Indigenous communities or individuals • Asset: Experience with Aboriginal and Constitutional Law • Asset: Experience and knowledge of regulatory hearing processes • Asset: Familiarity with negotiation and consultation processes involving Indigenous Nations, government, and industry
