• Review and assess incoming manuscripts and book proposals • Independently edit children’s and young adult novels, as well as graphic novels, from plot and character development through to a clean typesetting-ready manuscript • Handle copyediting, typesetting, and layout checks through final approval for print • Brief authors and ghostwriters, manage feedback rounds, and track milestones • Serve as the point of contact for creators regarding book content and translate their wishes into compelling, workable stories • Meet publication deadlines and plan backward from final print approval • Flag schedule risks at an early stage • Write back-cover copy • Contribute to series concepts • Conduct topic research and market analyses
• At least two to three years of experience editing children’s or young adult fiction, in publishing, at an agency, with a book packager, or as a freelancer • Strong feel for story structure, character development, point of view, and dialogue • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills • Experience working on series and to fixed publication schedules • Read children’s and young adult novels in your personal time as well • Native-level German • Ability to work independently and stay organized in a home-office environment • Keep commitments and report issues at an early stage • Proficient use of Microsoft Word Track Changes • Demonstrable experience in children’s fiction; experience solely in nonfiction, educational textbooks, or academic publishing is not sufficient • Experience working with YouTubers or influencers is not required
