📋 Description

• Design and build Home Assistant's AI foundation, including conversation APIs, LLM integrations, and typed tool layers • Create in-product agents that help users build and manage their homes while keeping users in control • Connect Home Assistant to the agentic world through open standards such as MCP, with scoped permissions • Grow Assist into a context-aware home-management assistant with memory, documentation, configuration, diagnostics, and local/cloud model choices • Make AI features easy to discover, configure, and disable • Build AI-powered workflows for issue triage, review assistance, and contributor tooling • Conduct code reviews for teammate and community pull requests • Collaborate with the open-source community to investigate and resolve reported issues • Provide input on architectural proposals and codebase changes • Work on the open development, maintenance, and enhancement of the Home Assistant platform • Report to the Home Assistant Lead

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in Python back-end development • 3+ years of experience with asyncio and threading • Built and shipped LLM-powered features in production Python, including tool calling, agent loops, streaming, evaluation, and handling model failures • Experience building with the Model Context Protocol, including MCP servers or clients, or comparable agent tool-calling interfaces • Experience with local, on-device inference such as Ollama or llama.cpp • Pragmatic understanding of language-model strengths, limitations, reliability, privacy, and safety • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail • Ability to work independently • Strong experience working remotely and asynchronously, with written communication driving collaboration • Experience with Git and GitHub • Professional fluency in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills • Must currently be based and eligible to work within Europe • Passion for smart homes and automation • Experience as a Home Assistant user • Experience contributing to open-source projects • Affinity with open-source development philosophy • Experience developing a Home Assistant integration or custom integration • Experience contributing to Home Assistant or related open-source projects • Experience building agentic developer tooling or AI-assisted workflows for engineering teams
