Oxford Dynamics is a UK-based defence technology company building AI-enabled systems and autonomous platforms for tactical intelligence and hazardous operations. Its flagship AVIS multi-agent AI engine analyses multi-modal sensor data, mirrors operator reasoning, and provides explainable insights. Oxford Dynamics develops SR-1, an airborne intelligence system that fuses EO/IR, RF, LiDAR, RADAR and other sensors for passive scouting and AI-directed investigation, and STRIDER, an autonomous ground robot for hazardous environments and frontline operations. The company is positioned to serve military and defence customers (including selection for UK MoD frameworks) and emphasizes deployable, explainable AI at the tactical edge.

📋 Description

• Apply and adapt machine-learning and reinforcement-learning research to Oxford Dynamics’ product roadmap, translating research direction into shippable capability • Design, train, and evaluate models using reinforcement learning, RLHF, and multi-objective policy optimisation • Balance competing objectives such as accuracy, safety, latency, and cost • Work on LLM post-training, including fine-tuning, alignment, reward modelling, and rigorous evaluation • Prototype quickly and work with engineering teams to harden successful approaches into production • Define evaluation methods for frontier models and determine how decision-making can be audited • Engage directly with customers and stakeholders • Explain technical approaches to non-specialists and feed real-world needs back into the research agenda • Help shape Oxford Dynamics’ research and product vision • Read the literature, build real systems, and take research from prototype through shipped product capabilities

🎯 Requirements

• A PhD in AI, machine learning or a closely related field, or holding a current postdoctoral research position in Machine Learning • Strong grounding in Machine Learning and reinforcement learning, including RLHF • Hands-on experience with multi-objective policy optimisation • Solid knowledge of transformer architectures and LLM post-training, including fine-tuning, alignment, and reward modelling • Publications at top-tier AI conferences such as ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, and CVPR • Experience using HPCs and CUDA for training large-scale models • Ability to translate research into a product vision and carry it through to delivery • Computer vision experience, open-source contributions, or applied research that shipped into a product (nice to have) • Commercial thinking connecting research effort to product value and customer impact • Communication and client-facing skills for explaining complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences, including customers • Calm, judgement-led decision making and comfort operating in ambiguity with fast-moving priorities • Align working pattern to UK office hours

🏖️ Benefits

• Inclusive team experience regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or parental status • Inclusive environment where everyone can be their authentic self
