📋 Description

• Design, build, evaluate, deploy, and improve AI/ML systems for Agency Fund platforms and partner applications • Contribute to Calibrate, an open-source AI evaluation infrastructure for nonprofits • Work with behavioral scientists and researchers to identify problems and translate solutions into reusable tools, playbooks, frameworks, and publications • Open-source non-trivial innovations from in-kind work • Implement rapid development and deployment cycles • Document technical decisions and maintain engineering standards across AI components • Track applied AI research and bring relevant advances to the team • Advise and support NGOs building generative AI products • Mentor NGO staff in industry best practices, culture, and tooling • Help organize workshops and seminars sharing lessons, best practices, and tools • Conduct site visits to observe NGO operations and draft technical recommendations • Collaborate with partner nonprofits across East Africa, South Asia, and beyond

🎯 Requirements

• Strong foundation in math, deep learning, LLMs, and modern AI systems • 4+ years of hands-on ML engineering experience building, evaluating, and systematically improving at least one end-user-facing deep-learning product beyond model API integration, internal dashboards, or ML infrastructure • 1–2 years of experience building LLM-powered applications • At least one production-grade agent beyond proof-of-concept demonstrations • Hands-on experience evaluating AI systems, including dataset and evaluation design • Fluency with prompting and context engineering for agentic systems • Very comfortable programming in Python • Comfortable using coding agents and accountable for shipped work • Comfortable reading research papers and testing relevant ideas • Experimental mindset and ability to reason about data, models, and evaluation together • Ability to think from first principles and design practical, scalable solutions • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-engineering audiences • Commitment to building AI responsibly and for direct social benefit • Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to Sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia • Bonus: multilingual NLP or low-resource language experience; global health, international development, or social impact technology experience; behavioral science or behavior-change AI; LLM data annotation and evaluation methodology; AI safety, alignment, or responsible AI; AWS, GCP, or Azure; production model deployment; top AI conference publications or substantial technical writing
