📋 Description

• Operate PostgreSQL and MySQL on Amazon RDS across production, staging, and development • Manage replication, failover, backup and recovery, upgrades, autovacuum, wraparound, purge, and replica lag • Run ClickHouse for operational and analytical workloads, including table engines, sort keys, partitioning, merges, replication, and ingestion paths • Support CockroachDB operations and take on more responsibility as familiarity grows • Trace slow queries and lock waits behind bets, settlements, and payouts to execution plans, statistics, schemas, or application code • Assess schema-change risk for large tables • Review schemas and queries with application teams before release • Build observability using Prometheus, Grafana, Mimir, and Loki • Participate in the data-layer on-call rota • Lead incident analysis and blameless postmortems • Build Python and Go tooling • Automate provisioning and recovery with Terraform • Use AI harnesses to investigate incidents and create durable tooling, verifying output against production facts • Implement and audit access controls and encryption for a regulated gaming platform • Set standards across database engines and participate in architecture reviews • Read source code when problems require code-level investigation

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years operating production relational databases as a DBA, Database Reliability Engineer, or Data Platform Engineer • Deep production experience with PostgreSQL and MySQL, or deep experience with one and serious working experience with the other • Understanding of PostgreSQL heap and row versions, InnoDB clustered index and undo log, write-ahead logging, cost-based planning, replication, failover options, and ClickHouse's differences from relational engines • Grounding in distributed systems, including consensus, distributed transactions, and consistency models • Python or Go, plus enough Java to debug line-of-business code • Linux, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring tools such as Grafana, AWS, and willingness to join an on-call rota • Clear technical writing and verbal communication • Ability to learn systems from source code, design documents, and experiments • Experience shipping Python or Go tooling for database operations, migration safety, or incident response • Experience investigating production incidents end-to-end, including execution plans and source code • Experience moving workloads between database engines or across major versions • Experience taking on work outside the database and influencing how another team built or shipped • Experience running ClickHouse, CockroachDB, or another distributed database in production • Experience with Kafka, Materialize, or Snowflake • Experience using AI coding agents in real work with evidence-based review habits • Desire for this role to be the main professional focus rather than one engagement among several
