Summary

  • Not every application needs a cover letter. Know when one actually helps.

    • Posting asks for one: always include it
    • Optional field on a form: usually worth filling (skipping can read as low effort)
    • Referral or recruiter path: a short personal note often beats a full letter
  • When you write one, keep it to 3 to 4 short paragraphs.

    1. Open with the role and one specific reason you’re drawn to the company
    2. Connect one or two strong, relevant achievements to what the role needs
    3. Close with genuine enthusiasm and a clear next step
  • Avoid: over a page, restating your resume word for word, or a generic template that could fit any company.
