Working with recruiters: how they operate and how to reach out

Summary

  • Know which recruiter you’re talking to.

    • Internal: works for one company; can only place you there
    • External / agency: works across clients; paid when they place you; may have several relevant roles
  • Keep outreach short and specific: target role, key skills, location or time zone if relevant, and availability.

    • Example: “I’m a UX designer with four years in fintech products, currently open to roles in my time zone, happy to share my portfolio if there’s a relevant opening.”
  • Avoid vague asks like “Do you have anything for me?” That gives them nothing to work with.

  • If you message recruiters often, LinkedIn Premium can be worth it here specifically (InMail + who viewed your profile). Not essential for the rest of the course.

  • Recruiters talk to many candidates. Clear, specific, easy to place is memorable; generic is not.
