Summary

  • Turn your target role into a short professional identity (1 to 2 sentences) so recruiters grasp who you are, and what you’re looking for, in about five seconds.

  • Use this formula:

    1. Role category a recruiter would file you under (not just a narrow job title)
    2. Your edge / USP: what you’re known for
    3. Outcomes you deliver: growth, retention, engagement, credibility, etc.
  • Examples of a strong professional identity:

    • “UX designer who turns confusing user journeys into simple flows. Known for lifting activation and reducing support tickets.”
    • “FP&A analyst who builds forecasts leaders can defend in the boardroom. Known for spotting risk early and tightening spend decisions.”
    • “Technical recruiter who fills hard to hire engineering roles without flooding the pipeline. Known for faster closes and stronger hiring manager trust.”
  • How to use it: keep the sentence for yourself as your north star, then filter it into every hiring touchpoint:

    • Resume: open your personal/profile summary with it (or a close version)
    • LinkedIn: echo it in your headline keywords and About section hook
    • Cover letter: lead with it so the reader instantly knows your lane and value
    • Stay consistent across all three so recruiters hear one clear story, not three different ones
