Summary

  • Market conditions change, but a mass/generic application approach rarely works. Recruiters spot generic applications immediately.

    • Common tell: wrong industry named in the summary.
  • Fewer tailored applications beat more generic ones. The tighter the competition, the more tailored you need to be.

  • Targeting must show up especially in your resume personal/profile summary and cover letter.

  • Over time, build a couple of resume + cover letter templates you lightly tweak per role. Don’t rewrite from scratch every time.

  • Don’t tailor so heavily that you only apply a couple of times a month. You still need volume.

  • Volume guideline:

    • Out of work: about 5 to 10 tailored applications per week
    • Employed and not desperate to leave: about 1 strong tailored application per week
