Writing a powerful personal summary

Summary

  • The personal/profile summary is hardest to write but most important. Recruiters read it first, weak ones lose interviews in seconds.

  • Keep it to 1 to 2 paragraphs, and use first person (“I managed,” “I delivered”).

  • Avoid AI sounding words (orchestrated, spearheaded). Swap for led / managed / delivered.

  • Cover three things:

    1. Where you’ve been
    2. Where you are now
    3. What you want next (this tells them the role/industry is intentional)
  • Examples (past + present + what you want next, first person, human language):

    • “I’ve spent the last seven years in product design, starting as a visual designer and moving into end to end UX ownership. Right now I’m a Senior Product Designer working on activation and retention flows, partnering with research, PM, and engineering to ship changes that users actually notice. I’m looking for a Lead Product Designer role on a consumer or marketplace product where I can set design quality, mentor other designers, and own major journey redesigns.”
    • “I’ve built my career in finance and analytics, from staff accounting into FP&A supporting growth and pricing decisions. I’m currently a Senior FP&A Analyst owning the monthly forecast, variance reviews, and the models leadership uses for hiring and spend plans. Next I want a Finance Manager or FP&A Manager role at a subscription or marketplace company where I can lead planning cycles and make the numbers easier for non finance teams to use.”
