Summary

  • Biggest resume mistake: too many responsibilities, not enough achievements / outcomes / impact.

  • Weave achievements throughout, especially on page one. Many recruiters never scroll further.

  • Numbers and percentages help, but they’re not required.

  • Types of impact you can claim:

    • Financial: grew, saved, conversion
    • People: grew/turned around a team, improved satisfaction
    • Process: efficiency, time saved
    • Reputation / reach: campaigns, credibility, awareness
    • Problem solving: inherited a mess and fixed it
  • For each role (especially current/previous), ask: if I hadn’t been there, what would have been different? That’s your impact, often your KPIs.

  • A resume of only responsibilities reads like a job description. Achievements show what you’re capable of.

  • Examples (mix of numbered and non numbered impact):

    • Financial: “Cut paid acquisition cost per signup 22% by rebuilding creative testing and pausing channels that looked busy but didn’t convert.”
    • People (no hard number needed): “Mentored three junior designers through their first end to end projects, giving clearer critique and helping them present work that landed with PMs on the first pass.”
    • Problem solving: “Inherited conflicting revenue dashboards across Sales and Finance, rebuilt a single source of truth in the warehouse, and stopped weekly meetings from arguing about whose report was correct.”
    • Process (numbers): “Reduced average support first response time from 14 hours to 3 hours by rewriting macros and routing rules for the top 20 ticket types.”
    • Reach / conversion (numbers): “Lifted free to paid conversion 31% in one quarter by redesigning the pricing page and clarifying plan differences in the trial email sequence.”
