📋 Description

• Lead protocol and pre-construction desert tortoise surveys and monitoring • Handle, rehydrate, and conduct health assessments of desert tortoises • Lead and conduct focused burrowing owl surveys and monitoring, including passive relocation • Lead and conduct American badger and desert kit fox surveys and monitoring • Conduct general wildlife and botanical surveys, including vegetation and habitat mapping • Identify and record native and non-native fauna and flora in the field • Conduct special-status species surveys following established protocols or guidelines • Conduct avian nesting surveys and avian mortality monitoring • Support project execution through pre-construction surveys and construction monitoring • Assist with environmental compliance monitoring • Oversee restoration crew work and monitor restoration vegetation performance • Coordinate with team members and schedule work • Collect, manage, interpret, and analyze electronic field data • Conduct survey and monitoring fieldwork independently and as part of a team in inland and desert environments • Work under the supervision of a senior project manager or senior-level team member • Keep assigned tasks on schedule and budget • Escalate compliance concerns to project or construction managers • Clarify resource project requirements for compliance and construction teams • Promote safety culture and adherence to Safe Work Plans • Locate, identify, and report desert tortoise sign according to approved protocols • Handle and temporarily hold desert tortoises • Relocate or translocate desert tortoises before project implementation • Excavate and reconstruct burrows; locate tortoises or eggs • Unearth and relocate desert tortoise eggs • Review and approve desert tortoise monitors and their activities • Supervise and train desert tortoise monitors during clearance surveys • Implement protective measures under biological opinions or permits • Record and report noncompliance incidents • Halt project activities according to biological opinions or permits

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related field such as biology or ecology • 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience working in desert environments within the range of the desert tortoise, with training and/or experience conducting surveys for listed species local to southern California desert regions, particularly desert tortoise and burrowing owl • Valid US driver's license • Pre-employment driving record verification • US Citizenship • Knowledge of desert tortoise behavior, natural history, and ecology • Substantial field experience and training conducting desert tortoise surveys and monitoring • Experience conducting focused burrowing owl surveys and monitoring • Experience with biological surveys, environmental compliance monitoring, and biological construction oversight • Knowledge of southern California wildlife and plant species • Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle over difficult terrain • Familiarity with regulatory and permitting requirements under the federal Endangered Species Act, California Endangered Species Act, NEPA, CEQA, and the Clean Water Act • Experience with electronic data collection methods, including Fulcrum and Field Maps • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • Flexibility and willingness to support multiple projects • Willingness to temporarily relocate to the California Desert region based on assignment • Preferred: prior consulting experience • Preferred: 10(A)(1)(a) permit for listed species local to southern California and Nevada
