Convergent Research is a nonprofit organization that supports the creation and operation of Focused Research Organizations (FROs). These are new types of scientific startups dedicated to tackling large-scale, coordinated projects in science and technology. The organization aims to produce high-impact public goods and drive forward technically ambitious projects led by teams of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Convergent Research operates with a focus on achieving pre-specified, quantifiable technical milestones within finite-duration projects. It is supported by significant funding from notable entities, including investment by influential figures in the science and tech communities.

📋 Description

• Create and fully own a growing portfolio of Focused Research Organizations (FROs) and other scientific projects advancing AI resilience • Roadmap the AI resilience landscape to identify bottlenecks and keystone capabilities • Source and diligence ideas for new projects and organizations • Design funding calls in partnership with funders • Build founding teams and help recruit early hires • Contribute to and coach founders on technical and organizational roadmaps, fundraising, and startup operations • Serve as a Director on multiple FRO boards and guide milestones, funding, strategic direction, hiring, firing, and operations • Represent Convergent Research and build relationships with philanthropic and public funders • Contribute to Convergent-wide initiatives such as Founder Retreats and Residencies • Develop an AI resilience portfolio thesis, support founders toward fundable plans, map the ecosystem, source and diligence potential FROs, and build relationships with funders and advisors

🎯 Requirements

• Understand the AI landscape of 2026 in granular detail • Have a view on where the world is exposed to AI-related risks and which exposures are tractable • Have ideas, or a credible plan to find ideas, for large-scale efforts that improve how the world weathers the AI transition • Ability to argue passionately for a thesis about where philanthropic capital should go and argue the other side just as well • Technical fluency in frontier AI • Deep network in the field • Understanding of how startups work, likely through experience at a startup, venture firm, or building something independently • Experience raising money, owning a budget, writing technical roadmaps, and hiring people • Experience assembling a group to accomplish a difficult technical project • Experience around boards, governance, or nonprofit leadership • Clear communication and ability to move fast
