📋 Description

• Lead the building and rebuilding of technology, systems, and ways of working for a sustained $5B+ annual operation • Build software that safely and securely moves billions of dollars to millions of people living in poverty • Lead engineering, data, security, and enterprise technology • Define the technology vision, technical strategy, target architecture, platforms, build-vs-buy decisions, and retirement plans • Translate program and product strategy into a sequenced portfolio of technical investments with executive, product, finance, risk, and data leaders • Manage six workstreams: new cash delivery stack; legacy-stack stabilization and migration; donor-facing fundraising products; global emergency cash system; enterprise technology; internal tooling, platform, and cybersecurity • Recruit outstanding engineering and technology talent • Design the technology organization across engineering, product, data, security, infrastructure, and enterprise systems • Grow the engineering team from approximately 15 to approximately 30 and establish management structure, accountability, decision rights, and career paths • Guide decisions on integrations, data, security, reliability, and technical debt • Ensure systems support increased transaction volume, geographic reach, and organizational dependence on technology • Serve on GiveDirectly’s executive team, report to the CEO, and partner with the VP Product • Help non-technical leaders understand technical constraints and costs • Build credibility with country and functional leaders and clarify priorities, ownership, and tradeoffs • Travel to GiveDirectly countries of operation approximately 4–6 times per year

🎯 Requirements

• Proven record identifying, hiring, developing, and retaining excellent engineers and engineering leaders • Experience creating team processes that consistently deliver software with quality and velocity • Ability to evaluate major designs, pressure-test architecture and build-vs-buy decisions, and identify when a team is heading in the wrong direction • Strong business judgment and decisiveness under ambiguity • Strong cross-functional partnership and understanding of business tradeoffs • Experience moving a team from AI experimentation to real, measured use • Ability to set tools, culture, goals, and guardrails for an AI-first engineering culture • Ability to embody, nurture, and promote GiveDirectly values • Experience in operationally complex or regulated domains is an advantage, including fintech, payments, humanitarian response, or global development • Experience with financial controls, fraud risk, identity, or sensitive recipient data is an advantage • Experience operating across multiple countries, particularly lower-income or infrastructure-constrained countries, is an advantage • Experience leading both modern product engineering and enterprise technology is an advantage • Ability to work hours between US Eastern Time and East African Time • Approximately 4–6 work trips per year • Successful completion of safeguarding and pre-hire screening, including reference, criminal background, and sanctions checks

🏖️ Benefits

• Bonus: $45,000-$112,000, based on organization-wide performance • Annual Benefits Stipend: approximately $21,000 for US-based employees; £2,760 in the UK; $8,453 in Kenya • Approximately 4–6 trips per year, including visits to GiveDirectly countries of operation • Professional growth and real professional development opportunities • Reasonable accommodations during the application, interview, and work process • Referral reward of $3,000 for a Senior Manager or above role, or $500 for a Manager role, paid if the referral is hired
