• Set GiveWell’s strategy across media, thought-leader engagement, online communities, public forums, events, and other earned communications opportunities • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, podcast hosts, event organizers, thought leaders, subject-matter experts, and other external stakeholders • Identify, develop, and pitch substantive stories, events, and thought-leadership ideas • Own inbound media engagement and rapid-response situations • Monitor emerging issues and lead GiveWell’s external response when needed • Advise leadership and prepare senior leaders and subject-matter experts for public appearances • Evaluate communications opportunities, reputational considerations, and communications risks • Shape public-facing communications partnerships • Serve as a GiveWell spokesperson in selected media interviews, events, and public forums • Collaborate with grantees and partners on press releases and media-facing communications • Manage and develop one or two team members initially and build the function over time • Report to the Vice President of Communications and collaborate with the other Senior Communications Officers
• 10+ years of experience in media relations, thought leadership, and public engagement • Significant experience leading communications in complex, high-stakes environments • Deep end-to-end experience owning media and public engagement work • Ability to build and lead a team or function, including hiring, developing, and managing people • Recent hands-on communications work personally produced or substantially shaped • Experience producing direct, factual, engaging, and effective communications • Ability to engage deeply with research and communicate data accurately • Exceptional communications judgment regarding audience, context, risk, timing, and substance • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Experience advising executives or senior decision-makers directly • Strong alignment with GiveWell’s mission and values, including truth-seeking, transparency, and accurate communication • Ability to work hours with minimum overlap with American working hours and key coworkers’ schedules • Willingness to attend three week-long retreats annually and potentially other domestic/international travel
