📋 Description

• Review electronic medical records to identify and collect patient data for patients treated for cancer and other reportable diagnoses. • Review case-finding lists for reportable cases, correct cases returned by the Texas Cancer Registry, and update existing registry cases. • Abstract patient information into the cancer management program in compliance with government regulations and provide information for physicians and research studies; expected to abstract 4–5 cases per day at hire. • Uphold legal and ethical requirements regarding release of cancer registry data, confidentiality, data transmission, and adherence to the NCRA Code of Ethics. • Attend training and seminars as needed to maintain compliance with Texas Department of Health reporting requirements. • Perform other duties as assigned.

🎯 Requirements

• Experience in tumor registry or medical records experience. • Working knowledge of medical terminology and tumor nomenclature. • Effective skills in abstracting and coding patient medical record information. • Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. • Ability to organize and prioritize work in an effective and efficient manner. • Ability to be detail-oriented as required in the examination of clinical and numerical data. • Proficient knowledge of all Microsoft applications. • Ability to remain up-to-date with educational and/or technical qualifications related to the cancer disease process, cancer diagnostic methods and procedures, patient records, data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills. • Associates degree in a health science field or post-high-school coursework in nursing, health information management, or a related field is required. • Four (4) years of registry/case abstracting experience is required. • Certified Oncology Data Specialist certification is required. • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is preferred.
