Misfits & Machines is an incubator and product studio that builds and accelerates bold, contrarian SaaS products and AI-driven ventures through creative 'misfit' thinking and hands-on engineering. They focus on taking ideas from ideation to implementation—testing, validating, and scaling products—while leveraging generative AI (machine vision, AI audio, AI visual arts), front-end and back-end engineering, and design expertise. The team combines advertising and TV experience (via their sister agency, Marketing Architects) with deep technical AI and product talent to create brand-forward, data-driven products and prototypes rather than acting as traditional investors.

📋 Description

• Design and own the legal operating model for Misfits & Machines from the ground up: stage gates, decision rights, governance frameworks, and the legal infrastructure that lets AI-enabled products ship with confidence. • Own commercial contracts, product terms, creator licenses, and partner agreements hands-on, not through outside counsel proxy. • Be the go-to counsel on training-data legality, copyright, voice and likeness risk, DMCA safe harbor, FTC advertising standards, and privacy across both Audiotising and AudioKnot. • Work directly with Product and Engineering to embed legal requirements before launch, turning regulatory constraints into actionable product decisions, not post-launch blockers.

🎯 Requirements

• JD with active Minnesota bar license; 10–15 years of experience including progression to counsel or partner level at a firm and 3–5 years in-house at a tech, AI, adtech, or product-led company. • Demonstrated depth in training-data legality, copyright, right of publicity, voice and likeness risk, and synthetic-media issues. • Track record of personally drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements, not managing outside counsel who does it. • Comfortable operating without a legal team around you, and experienced working directly with Product and Engineering to shape platforms before they launch, not after.
