• Independently lead development and execution of complex litigation • Identify strategic legal opportunities and generate new litigation opportunities • Manage investigations, legal research, client engagement, pleadings, motions, memoranda, briefs, discovery, experts, negotiations, trials, appeals, and public communications • Represent plaintiffs and clients across multiple jurisdictions • Lead remedy and settlement implementation, including tracking compliance and communicating with clients and monitors • Manage litigation costs and fee recovery • Recruit and coordinate co-counsel, including pro bono counsel • Negotiate co-counsel and retainer agreements • Oversee legal practice for cases and supervise co-counsel firm staff • Represent NCYL at national conferences, media outlets, and other external forums • Manage case budgets and support fundraising and development efforts • Collaborate with litigation directors, managing directors, senior directors, and other staff on mission-aligned litigation • Supervise senior attorneys, staff attorneys, paralegals, fellows, and law clerks as needed • Report to the co-directors of litigation • Assist with other duties as assigned
• Minimum of a degree in law (JD) • Member in good standing of the bar of at least one state • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience since law school graduation, or 10 years including demonstrated success leading relevant impact litigation from inception to reform implementation in at least three jurisdictions • Understanding of and experience in complex litigation involving children’s civil rights and public systems affecting children and youth • Understanding of the role of structural racism and bias in public systems • Deep subject matter expertise in at least one NCYL issue area • Experience generating and leading complex civil litigation with significant impact in multiple jurisdictions/forums • Experience building rapport and respect with diverse youth and their families • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills • Experience drafting complex motions and briefs • Strong, clear, and persuasive oral communication skills • Organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented • Ability to work independently and collaboratively • Ability to coordinate litigation development with other advocacy strategies • Ability to collaborate with NCYL staff to advance organizational goals • Ability to manage and broaden relationships with external partners • Ability to develop new legal theories or extend existing precedent • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills for complex projects • Effective and committed supervisor and mentor • Strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion • Ability to apply a racial and social justice lens to advocacy while centering marginalized voices • Commitment to NCYL’s mission and goals • Candidate must reside in California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington DC, or Wisconsin; Minnesota and Washington State are currently registering • Litigation-based writing sample required • Cover letter and resume required • Some travel required • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer • Fluency in English required; fluency in another language is preferred
