• Manage an inventory primarily consisting of higher-loss-potential and complex claims, including reserving, settlement authority, and reinsurance reporting requirements • Investigate, evaluate, and settle claims within designated authority • Determine coverage applicable to losses and determine liability • Manage and resolve claims timely, objectively, and in compliance with company policies, state laws, and regulatory standards • Set and maintain adequate claim reserves • Conduct investigations and assign fieldwork as necessary • Present coverage and claims analysis to management and recommend resolutions for disputed items • Prepare verbal and written claim status reports pursuant to company policy and reinsurance treaty requirements • Report cases exceeding designated authority to managers and reinsurers • Assign litigated cases to defense counsel and manage legal processes and expenses • Maintain electronic claim files • Analyze and report on defense counsel performance • Represent the company at settlement conferences, mediation, and arbitration when needed • Work with outside counsel and insureds to resolve underlying litigation • Participate in internal and external audits • Participate in weekly department and Claims Committee meetings • Promote team-based case and account management • Participate in marketing presentations and training programs as needed • Provide accurate, courteous, and timely information to internal and external customers • Collaborate with staff members and external partners • Travel as necessary
• Minimum of ten or more years of progressively more difficult claims handling experience • Four-year college degree or equivalent business experience • Highly technical claim management skills • Significant knowledge of and experience with more than one of: Employment Practices Liability, Social Service Professional, Sexual Abuse, General Liability, Business Auto, or Commercial Property • Ability and willingness to obtain adjuster licenses as needed in various states • Thorough knowledge of current tort law and case law trends for casualty lines of business • Knowledge of civil procedure, insurance policies, and contracts • Strong written and oral communication skills • Strong organization and follow-up skills • Ability to analyze and apply creative solutions to claim issues • Proven critical thinking, analysis, judgment, and decision-making skills • Strong negotiating and conflict resolution skills • Ability to manage total loss cost outcomes including ALAE • Ability to work independently and collaboratively • Ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment • Ability to uphold confidentiality and professional boundaries • PC literacy required; proficiency in Windows, Word, and Outlook preferred • Ability to utilize laptops and other business tools while traveling • Adequate vision to clearly view a computer screen • Adequate hearing to perform job tasks • Ability to mentor peer groups or junior claims staff
