OpenLiteracy is an education company that provides high-impact, 1:1 online reading tutoring delivered by Science of Reading–certified teachers. The organization partners with school districts to offer tutoring before, during, and after school, and also offers curriculum resources such as decodables and summer school support. OpenLiteracy focuses on evidence-aligned reading instruction and district-level implementation to improve student literacy outcomes.

📋 Description

• Work 1:1 with students in grades K–6 through OpenLiteracy's secure online platform • Use the curriculum designed by the OpenLiteracy team; no lesson planning required • Conduct 25-minute tutoring sessions • Work with the same students over time to build trusting relationships • Balance explicit reading instruction with meaningful engagement with text • Integrate comprehension throughout instruction and support rich, confident conversations at every reading level • Maintain consistent availability for assigned students • Complete the application process, including teaching-focused questions and short video responses • Attend a short interview with a hiring team member • Complete a criminal background check, FBI fingerprinting, and educational verification • Join the talent pool and accept a placement when a matching tutoring opportunity becomes available

🎯 Requirements

• Current or expired K–6 teaching certification; must be able to provide a copy • K–6 classroom teaching experience with a focus on reading • Strong grounding in the Science of Reading, including phonics, structured literacy, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction • At least 3 hours of consistent availability Monday–Thursday during peak hours, 10:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. ET, minimum 4 days per week • Commitment to at least 10 consistent hours per week • U.S. work authorization • U.S. mailing address • Ability to receive U.S. bank deposits • Reliable computer with camera and microphone • High-speed internet • Quiet workspace • TOEFL certification and substitute teaching licenses do not fulfill the certification requirement • Unable to hire candidates based in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, or New Jersey • Preferred: experience with Tier 3 reading intervention • Preferred: experience teaching English Learners • Preferred: experience supporting students with reading disabilities

• Tutors begin at a starting rate of $28/hour once placed • Paid for student no-shows and late cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled time • Paid for tutoring sessions and meetings attended • Initial asynchronous orientation compensated at a flat rate of $100 • Comprehensive paid onboarding • Ongoing support from the learning specialist team • Week off at Thanksgiving • Approximately two weeks off during the winter • Summers off • Small number of summer tutoring opportunities available for interested tutors • Fully remote work • No commute, classroom setup, or lesson planning
