• Apply protective relaying and controls systems knowledge to HV and EHV substations. • Work on substation modifications and upgrades, including calculations, document designs, and specifications. • Prepare relaying philosophies; select relay, control, and communications equipment; develop SCADA and telecommunications concepts and configurations; oversee I/O assignments and connection diagrams. • Guide engineers and designers in protection and controls engineering design and coordinate detailed design phases. • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve engineering issues. • Analyze and design single-line diagrams, substation relaying and metering diagrams, AC schematic diagrams, and DC schematic diagrams. • Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review. • Independently review calculations and drawings prepared by others. • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to deliver complete and timely designs. • Review existing facilities and propose upgrades and replacements; present findings and recommendations. • Share knowledge through Sargent & Lundy’s Communities of Practice. • Mentor less experienced engineers. • Potentially travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and plant sites for construction coordination and field verification.
• This position requires a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree. • 12 or more years experience designing substations at 138kV and above. • PE license. • Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role. • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for relay calculations. • Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles involved in producing technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. • Proficiency with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or vendor software. • Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI. • Experience with vendor protective relay equipment, including SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, and Basler. • Proficiency with MS Office applications. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Must not require employer sponsorship for work authorization in the U.S. • Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering degree is preferred, not required. • ABET-accredited engineering degree is valued but not required. • Prior experience with in-line, bus and equipment protection; breaker, transformer and similar equipment control; RTU and data-concentrator SCADA systems; telemetering and communications is desirable. • AutoCAD or MicroStation experience is valued but not required. • Construction and start-up experience is valued but not required. • Testing or commissioning experience is valued but not required. • Willingness or ability to lead others using data, automation, AI, and modern engineering tools. • Ability to oversee engineering automation and agentic AI workflows and ensure outputs are checked is valued. • Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel scripting oversight experience is valued but not required.
