📋 Description

• Set the editorial and strategic direction of the Journal of Forestry • Work with SAF publishing staff to grow manuscript submissions, including soliciting special issues and sections • Identify opportunities for ethical impact factor growth and increased citations • Attract and retain qualified authors and reviewers • Improve manuscript performance milestones, including submission-to-decision time • Support strategic growth projects such as surveying, messaging, and solicitations • Identify, invite, and onboard associate editors • Monitor associate editor performance and provide guidance • Respond promptly to manuscripts requiring Editor in Chief action in the manuscript and peer review system • Assign manuscripts to associate editors and oversee the review process • Complete associate editor assignments when necessary • Evaluate submissions and issue final editorial decisions • Assist with front matter collection, including podcast selection, cover images, and Editor’s Choice • Create and report opportunities for special supplement sales and sponsorships • Attend and lead the annual meeting at SAF’s National Convention • Collaborate with publishing staff on yearly Journal performance reports • Contribute manuscripts, editorials, cover images, or special items as needed

🎯 Requirements

• Maintain active membership in the Society of American Foresters, or become a member if selected • Resident of the United States • Significant record of authorship of scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals or successful science communication and dissemination publications • Publishing experience as a reviewer, editor, publication manager, and/or science communicator • Graduate degree in a field of forestry, preferably a PhD • Broad-based understanding of forestry and related natural resources • Established professional network spanning academia, industry, and federal agencies and contractors • Proficiency with cloud-based computing, email, Microsoft Office Suite, and web-based software • Knowledge of manuscript and peer review management platforms, or ability to quickly train toward proficiency • Ability to coordinate strategically with SAF leaders, including the Board, CEO, program directors, and staff • Sound judgment, professionalism, accountability, diplomacy, and ability to uphold scientific publishing standards • Necessary employer support to perform the role, or ability to conduct responsibilities on personal time • Federal employees must obtain necessary ethics approval • Ability to disclose all actual or perceived conflicts of interest and financial disclosures
