📋 Description

• Restructure the P&L to describe Tern's businesses and provide unit economics per transaction • Own the financial model derived from the P&L • Set revenue recognition policy across all business verticals • Oversee the month-end close process • Own burn policy, categorization, and reconciliation between P&L expenses and cash outflows • Write accounting requirements for payment and operations products • Collaborate with the Finance Product Lead and engineering to implement accounting requirements • Map and close tax exposure for new business lines • Serve as the accounting subject-matter expert for Tern and its users • Report to the Chief of Staff and partner on supplier economics and investor-facing work • Act as the company's accounting authority for internal and external questions

🎯 Requirements

• Deep technical accounting expertise and ability to reason from accounting standards • Experience as the first or earliest accounting hire at one or two startups • Experience building a chart of accounts, month-end close, and controls • Revenue recognition experience under ASC 606 • Experience making gross-vs-net and principal-vs-agent determinations • Experience accounting for payments and marketplaces, including held funds, payouts, chargebacks, interchange, and processing fees • Experience writing accounting requirements for engineering teams • Ownership of month-end close processes • Ability to operate without a defined process and take ownership of unassigned work • CPA is a bonus • Travel tech or commission, supplier statement, and trust accounting experience is a bonus • Institutional fundraising and diligence experience is a bonus • Experience replacing outsourced bookkeeping and bringing the function in-house is a bonus • Multi-entity or multi-currency experience is a bonus
