• Report on the world of food and culinary culture • Produce fascinating stories across a wide-ranging food beat, including dining and lifestyle trends, food science, culinary obsessions, and consumer behavior • Investigate how chains fit into American culture and why shifts in food consumption matter • Develop original ideas and write clearly and stylishly for a wide audience • Break news and analyze what culinary moments reveal about contemporary life • Collaborate and communicate effectively with editors • Cultivate and communicate with a deep bench of sources • Write frequently, with authority and humor • Work quickly, meet deadlines, and switch gears as needed

🎯 Requirements

• Substantial experience as a reporter for general-interest publications • Deep interest in food culture • Understanding of how to translate compelling ideas into deftly reported and beautifully written stories • Impeccable editorial judgment • High standards for quality and accuracy • Facility with the ethics and rigors of journalism • Deep familiarity with The Atlantic • Ability to spot trends and maintain healthy skepticism about them • Ability to work quickly, meet deadlines, and switch gears as needed • Interest in and openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives • Desire to write frequently, with authority and humor • Ability to communicate effectively with editors and sources • Successful completion of reference checks • Compliance with The Atlantic's COVID-19 vaccination policy; employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19, including subsequent boosters, unless an accommodation applies
