• Review new claims assignments to determine the nature and severity of claims and required action • Review and interpret applicable policy coverages • Promptly contact insureds, witnesses, and other parties of interest • Conduct field investigations for assigned claims • Identify risks/exposures and damages through recorded statements, investigation reports, evidence, and other documentation • Vet, select, and retain experts when necessary and approved • Apply expense management initiatives • Complete building evaluation ITV based on Property Guideline to determine whether coinsurance applies • Determine damage scope and prepare estimates using Xactimate, including site inspections, diagrams, and photographs • Negotiate with contractors or repair facilities regarding damage extent and repair methods • Evaluate damages and recommend reserves • Document file activity through detailed file notes and prepare claim reports • Determine and communicate coverage decisions • Inform underwriting about increased hazards or unusual risk/policy exposure circumstances • Resolve claims through negotiation, settlement, and/or denial • Identify subrogation potential and posture claims for successful recovery • Maintain relationships with underwriting, risk control, marketing, and independent agencies • Participate in continuing education and claims committees • Mentor other Claims Specialists • Travel to complete field assignments, including possible catastrophe adjusting team assignments • Work irregular hours, evenings, weekends, and possible overnight travel as needed
• High school diploma • College degree preferred • AIC, SCLA or Legal Principles, CCLA and PCLA of the AEI series, or CPCU to be completed in 2 years • Meet the appropriate state licensing laws required to handle claims • 6+ years claims handling experience • Knowledge of claims best practices • Knowledge of unfair claims practices/bad faith • Knowledge of various lines of policy coverage • Knowledge of venue and regulations • Basic legal terminology • Working knowledge of safety procedures • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret policy language, endorsements, and contracts while applying them to the claim • Analytical ability to determine coverage, complete building evaluation and calculate coinsurance for reserves and settlement • Negotiation, human relations, analytical, and organization skills • Ability to concisely document information into appropriate file notes and reports • Customer focused • Clear verbal and written communication • Analytical and critical thinking • Problem-solving • Time management/multi-tasking • Required to climb ladders/roofs while in the field • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs regularly
