Allswell is an online, LGBTQ+ affirming mental health provider (Allswell Health PBC) that delivers trauma-informed individual therapy and peer group programs via video. It pairs licensed, rigorously trained therapists who are members of or experienced with the LGBTQ+ community with evidence-based approaches (eg, CBT, CPT, EMDR) and skills-building groups to treat identity-based trauma and related conditions. Allswell accepts Medicaid and many commercial insurance plans (and offers cash-pay options), uses HIPAA-compliant records, and currently serves Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia while expanding to more states.

📋 Description

• Report directly to the CTO • Lead development of the AI-powered product suite that improves clinician effectiveness and enables more personalized care • Build patient and provider growth experiences • Own the AI codebase as the most senior engineer on a growing team • Build alongside offshore engineers • Grow the engineering team over time • Mentor in-house engineers • Set engineering standards for shipping code • Influence architecture, product, and technical direction

🎯 Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience • Applied AI experience taken from prototype to production and shipped to real users • Deep familiarity with LLM APIs, RAG, agentic systems, and eval harnesses • Backend API and frontend interface experience • Hands-on experience with Node.js/NestJS and modern React/TypeScript • Experience with AWS infrastructure and integrating AI tools • Technical leadership experience and ability to make strong architectural decisions • Ability to work across product, engineering, and clinical teams • Strong product instincts • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field • Previous founding or early-stage startup engineering experience preferred • Previous healthcare or regulated-environment experience preferred • Strong perspective on appropriate AI use preferred • Ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality preferred
