📋 Description

• Own monthly, quarterly, and year-end close across Lazer entities • Prepare financial statements, management reporting, and variance analysis • Maintain accounting policies, working papers, and a clean audit trail • Complete or review accounting work directly when needed • Own accounting for time-and-materials, fixed-fee, and retainer engagements • Manage work in progress, unbilled revenue, deferred revenue, and revenue recognition judgments • Run project reviews with delivery leaders covering revenue, cost, margin, utilization, and labour economics • Identify budget overruns, change orders, and billing gaps • Support forecasting, scenario analysis, pricing decisions, and business performance analysis • Review client contracts and statements of work for revenue recognition, billing terms, and collectability • Oversee cash management, banking, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll • Standardize invoicing and collections for project-based work • Lead the annual audit and serve as primary contact for auditors, tax advisors, banks, and finance partners • Coordinate Canadian tax and compliance requirements, including GST/HST, year-end filings, SR&ED support, and cross-border or multi-entity requirements • Maintain practical controls for a growing remote company • Assess the finance stack and prioritize operational improvements • Automate reconciliations, close tasks, reporting, and recurring workflows • Use AI to reduce manual work and improve analysis, documentation, and decision support • Build reliable data flows between finance, delivery, sales, and people systems • Partner with the CFO and Finance Manager as a senior member of a small team • Translate financial results into recommendations for business leaders • Challenge assumptions and follow issues through to resolution • Help define Lazer’s finance team, systems, and operating model for future growth

🎯 Requirements

• CPA designation required • At least seven years of progressive accounting and finance experience • Experience owning the close and financial reporting as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accounting Manager, or equivalent • Hands-on experience in a lean finance team, ideally in a startup, scale-up, technology, consulting, or professional services business • Strong technical accounting judgment • Experience with audit, tax, controls, and multi-entity reporting • Experience with project or contract-based revenue, including time-and-materials, fixed-fee, or retainer engagements • Understanding of how delivery decisions affect margin, cash, and revenue recognition • Strong analytical skills and ability to turn transaction detail into business recommendations • Comfort with evolving processes and ambiguity • Sound judgment, high ownership, and confidence challenging senior stakeholders constructively • Strong spreadsheet skills and experience with Xero or comparable cloud accounting platform • Experience improving finance systems, close processes, reporting, or data quality • Practical experience using automation or AI in finance • Clear written and verbal communication skills • Ability to explain accounting issues to non-finance colleagues • Ability to collaborate effectively in a remote-first organization • Experience in a Canadian company with US operations, customers, or team members is an asset • ERP, close management platform, reporting tool, or finance workflow implementation experience is an asset • Experience supporting financing, acquisitions, diligence, or investor reporting is an asset
