📋 Description

• Own full-stack delivery of reliable, intuitive web experiences • Build front-end interfaces, backend services, APIs, authentication and permissions, content delivery, product analytics, and third-party integrations • Recommend and evolve the technology stack and architecture • Make tradeoffs between speed, cost, flexibility, and future scale; document consequential decisions • Help assess and select development partners • Translate product outcomes into technical plans; scope, sequence, and review work • Maintain code quality and hold front-end and back-end contractors accountable for dependable delivery • Collaborate with the CPO, product designers, users, content experts, research partners, and implementation partners from discovery through release • Participate in continuous discovery with teachers, coaches, and partner organizations • Define outcomes and measures, instrument the product, study usage and performance data, and improve or stop features based on evidence • Prototype, ship small increments, and pivot when evidence changes • Establish and maintain automated testing, contract testing, code review, CI/CD, observability, documentation, and incident-response practices • Lead partner integrations and evaluate build-versus-buy-versus-partner decisions • Design privacy and security into the architecture and delivery process • Establish access controls, data retention and governance practices, vendor reviews, backups, monitoring, and a path toward school and district compliance • Use modern AI-assisted development tools and integrate AI-enabled features where they create demonstrated user value • Translate technical risks and choices for non-technical colleagues, surface constraints early, forecast delivery realistically, and support high-quality decisions • Report to the CEO and work closely with the Chief Product Officer and cross-functional partners • Establish the year-one architecture, stack, workflow, and security baseline • Support contract engineers while remaining a high-leverage individual contributor • Lead on-time delivery and support multiple 2027 research pilots with real users

🎯 Requirements

• 3-6+ years of professional software engineering experience • Substantial hands-on ownership across modern front-end and backend systems • Track record of shipping user-facing products to production, including integrations with third-party platforms • Experience operating in an early-stage company, new venture, or similarly ambiguous environment • Experience making architecture decisions, building core infrastructure, and writing production code • Experience leading work delivered by contract or distributed engineers • Strong product orientation, including defining outcomes, success measures, instrumentation, and evidence-based decision-making • Experience building with sensitive or regulated data • Experience designing access controls, data retention policies, and vendor/security reviews • Strong communication skills • Nice to have: experience shipping AI-enabled, user-facing features • Nice to have: experience with media processing pipelines, including video uploads • Nice to have: direct experience with district security reviews, SOC 2, or comparable education compliance processes • Nice to have: experience in K–12 education, educator professional learning, simulations, learning platforms, or classroom video • Motivation by TeachSim's mission and comfort with the tradeoffs of joining a nonprofit startup • Comfortable working remotely and collaborating across different time zones • Core working days and hours Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm, with flexibility according to workload and meetings
