📋 Description

• Work on the data infrastructure platform supporting Backblaze’s B2 Object Storage and Computer Backup products • Improve automation, observability, and stability for durability • Increase throughput and drive architectural changes for long-term service requirements • Design and build automation frameworks for provisioning, configuring, and repairing fleet infrastructure • Design and extend observability stacks covering metrics, logs, traces, and alerts • Build reporting, dashboards, and visualizations for fleet health, capacity, and operational trends • Build system health tooling to detect failing hardware, configuration drift, and capacity risk before incidents • Lead technical design discussions and produce design documents spanning multiple services and teams • Drive large features from design through rollout, including migrations and backfills • Partner with the on-call rotation to turn recurring toil and incident findings into automation and improved signals

🎯 Requirements

• 7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment • Experience with an object-oriented or systems language such as Java, Rust, C++, C#, or Go • Experience designing automation frameworks or platforms that other engineers build on • Experience building large-scale software systems running on thousands of servers • Experience building automation or tooling used daily by other engineers • Working knowledge of observability stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, or Datadog • Experience instrumenting services and designing trusted alerts • Strong Linux fundamentals • Comfort operating in bare-metal or hybrid environments rather than fully managed cloud environments • Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Gemini, Cursor, or Claude Code • Familiarity with the full software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout • Curiosity and willingness to understand problems before offering solutions • Proactive communication in a remote environment • Analytical thinking for ambiguous problems • Bonus: proficiency in Java • Bonus: experience with configuration management or infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef, or Terraform • Bonus: experience designing SLOs and error budgets or reducing alert noise at scale • Bonus: experience with time-series databases and query languages such as PromQL • Bonus: experience automating hardware lifecycle work • Bonus: experience improving CPU and IO performance • Bonus: understanding of Linux internals and file systems • Bonus: familiarity with hard drive performance and host-managed SMR • Bonus: experience building and interpreting models, dashboards, or reports
