Colonist is an online multiplayer board-game platform (Colonist. io) positioned as a free web and app-based alternative to Settlers of Catan. It provides rooms, ranked and casual play modes, bots, leaderboards, spectate mode, chat, maps and expansions, turn timers, and a membership option for access to all maps and expansions. The service is consumer-facing and focuses on enabling players to play online with friends or strangers via browser and app.

📋 Description

• Own Colonist’s infrastructure end to end across Kubernetes clusters, Docker builds, and DigitalOcean services • Manage cluster and cloud resources as code in Terraform • Move production deployments from manual weekly releases toward safer, more frequent releases • Own capacity, including autoscaling, load balancer limits, and connection limits • Document systems, architecture decisions, runbooks, and incidents • Maintain and improve the path from merge to production • Operate PostgreSQL, Redis, and NATS under real production traffic • Investigate slow queries, connection and capacity limits, schema migrations, and message compatibility during rolling deploys • Maintain Cloudflare DNS, proxying, caching, rate limiting, Turnstile, and R2 configuration • Own observability across Sentry and New Relic and consolidate monitoring tools • Build self-service infrastructure paths and guardrails • Respond to incidents, lead root cause analysis, and write preventive postmortems

🎯 Requirements

• Senior-level experience in DevOps • Production Kubernetes experience including rollouts, autoscaling, networking, load balancers, and debugging bad deploys • Documentation-first working style for systems, decisions, and runbooks • Comfortable with Linux, Docker, and a CI system not built by you • Production PostgreSQL and Redis experience under real traffic, including slow queries, connection limits, and zero-downtime schema migrations • Production message broker experience; NATS or equivalent • Experience putting Cloudflare or a similar edge in front of a public service • Ability to debug live incidents across application logs, metrics, database, and edge • AI-forward mindset and AI fluency • Ability to work independently in existing systems • Strong written communication for technical and non-technical audiences • Collaborative working style • Nice to have: AI-consumable documentation, self-service infrastructure paths, security depth, cloud cost optimization, live services or gaming experience, and solo or near-solo infrastructure experience
