The Institute focuses on cause areas like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nuclear weapons, advocating for policy changes and public awareness to mitigate associated risks. FLI engages in policy advocacy, outreach, grantmaking, and hosting events to discuss safe development and governance of these technologies. It collaborates internationally with entities like the United Nations and the European Union to ensure that powerful technologies are harnessed for positive future outcomes.

📋 Description

• Develop a rigorous argument that a credible AI strategy need not depend on building or adopting maximally general, autonomous AI systems • Monitor and support non-hyperscaling technical paths, including efficient/smaller models, open-source and open-science AI, physical AI/robotics, and high-value industrial and scientific data applications • Engage policymakers and stakeholders interested in sovereign AI strategies, including Brazil, Canada, EU Member States and the EU AI Office in Brussels • Build coalitions across relevant stakeholders • Produce policy-ready recommendations for policymakers • Develop and advocate a pro-human, reliable, verifiable, controllable, human-directed, and purpose-driven AI strategy • Engage with policymakers on how AI innovation and safety regulation can go hand in hand • Report to the Head of European Policy and Research

🎯 Requirements

• Experienced technology strategist, ideally in AI policy • Sufficient technical fluency in advanced AI, including capabilities trajectories, agentic systems, evaluation and verification methods • Experience engaging policymakers outside of the US and China, or a demonstrated capacity to do so • Excellent written and spoken communication • Ability to produce policy-ready analysis and represent FLI in expert and/or high-level settings • Proven experience translating technical concepts to non-technical audiences • Stakeholder management and partnership building skills across institutions, industry and international partners • Independence and initiative • Alignment with FLI's mission of mitigating catastrophic risk while advancing positive futures • Graduate degree in a relevant field such as economics, computer science, or a technical AI discipline (preferred) • Previous experience at a tech startup or similar technology-industry experience (preferred) • Background in or close knowledge of a safety-sensitive industrial sector (preferred) • Existing network among frontier AI researchers and relevant policymakers (preferred)
