📋 Description

• Own the technical architecture for the aftersales domain, including system design, API contracts, data models, integration patterns, and Architectural Decision Records • Enforce Watu engineering standards within the squad • Represent the squad to Platform General Architecture and contribute to shared standards • Review and approve all squad pull requests and maintain the Definition of Done • Partner with QA to ensure quality is built into delivery • Own the squad release process and sign off on production releases • Drive sprint planning with the Product Owner, translate user stories into technical tasks, surface dependencies, and flag risks • Govern external partners where applicable, including reviewing partner code and release timing • Manage 4–6 direct reports through day-to-day unblocking, design reviews, pairing, feedback, and technical growth • Provide input into performance reviews and hiring decisions • Model active AI/LLM usage across the squad • Own implementation of aftersales flows including device swap, repair, insurance claims, returns, and end-of-loan processing • Own the aftersales data layer and integrations with Device Management Engineering • Design operationally configurable processes and build dashboards/reporting for aftersales operations

🎯 Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience • At least 2 years as the de facto technical authority for a significant product area or team • Strong backend engineering fundamentals: distributed systems, event-driven architecture, API design, database design, and testing strategy • Ability to review and reason about code across the full stack of the domain • Experience in an Agile/Scrum or Kanban environment driving sprint ceremonies, backlog refinement, and delivery alongside a Product Owner • Clear, direct communication with engineers, Product, and the Head of Engineering • Experience building post-sale or after-market workflow systems, such as warranty, repair, insurance, or returns platforms • Strong integration engineering skills and experience owning service-to-service contracts in a microservices environment • Understanding of operational workflow design, including state machines, task queues, and human-in-the-loop steps • Comfort working in a domain where business processes are still maturing • Strongly preferred: experience in fintech, payments, or digital financial services in Africa or LATAM • Strongly preferred: experience governing external engineering partners or SaaS vendor integrations • Strongly preferred: hands-on Java backend development experience • Strongly preferred: familiarity with event-driven architecture and Kafka or equivalent message brokers • GitHub, mandatory peer review, unified branching strategy, and green CI before merge • OpenAPI/Swagger documentation and Architectural Decision Records • AWS Secrets Manager or Vault for secrets management • OWASP Top 10 awareness • Active use of AI/LLM tooling for code generation, test writing, documentation, and debugging
