📋 Description

• Code and abstract surgical operative notes for designated surgical and procedural specialty areas • Code primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT conventions • Review complex medical records and approved supporting documentation, including pathology, radiology, and physician consultations • Capture applicable Physician Quality Reporting System measures and reconcile surgical cases • Provide education and training to physicians and other providers on coding and clinical documentation • Provide real-time feedback to surgical and procedural providers on coding and documentation • Liaise with providers and departments to clarify documentation deficiencies • Mentor and assist in training other coders • Participate in developing coding policies and procedures • Coordinate and mentor designated coding employees through regular quality audits • Research and develop continuing-education presentation materials for physicians • Analyze coding-related trends for management and revenue managers • Research unbilled-account trends and contact appropriate personnel regarding documentation inefficiencies • Coordinate quality-reporting measures with providers and management • Collaborate with appeal and edit coders to resolve accounts • Use authorized electronic systems for documentation, coding abstraction, CCI edits, LCD, and NCD coverage review • Perform other related duties

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in medical record administration, or associate degree in medical record technology, or one-year coding diploma, or courses in Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology with extensive training in coding • Four years of coding experience, including at least two years in surgical abstraction • Experience in physician or medical group multi-specialty surgical practices, such as cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, or orthopedics • RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC certification • Extensive knowledge of coding surgical procedures and applicable modifiers in a multi-specialty setting • Understanding and application of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services guidelines to coding • Advanced ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding conventions • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques • Extensive DRG/APC reimbursement knowledge • Familiarity with coding software • Effective written and verbal communication skills • Data entry/CRT proficiency • Must reside in one of the listed states for Duke University remote workers
