• Lead the editorial strategy, production, and day-to-day operations of the AORN Journal • Supervise Journal content and the Journal editorial team from planning through distribution • Ensure Journal content is accurate, relevant, timely, valuable, and meets reader and stakeholder needs • Review and edit feature articles, columns, special reports, and other Journal content • Serve as handling editor for the President’s Message column • Select and assign content for each monthly issue • Create and manage workflow schedules for Journal team members • Track and manage the annual page budget • Create and maintain the annual Journal editorial calendar • Plan and support Periop Briefing content development • Provide monthly issue lineups and coordinate cover image approval • Build and coordinate web assets for Journal webpages and homepage • Manage podcast selection, distribution, and invoicing • Identify and implement process improvements related to author communications, guidelines, outreach, peer review, and related workflows • Track and manage manuscripts in the manuscript and peer-review platform • Manage export and transfer of articles to the publisher • Establish working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including AORN departments, the publisher, and ad sales team • Co-manage monthly issue proof reviews and document final-stage corrections • Manage pre- and post-conference content coverage, including interviews, highlights, posters, and award winners • Coordinate assets needed for layouts • Recruit, train, and manage performance of the Journal editorial team • Meet regularly with the Editor-in-Chief and publisher teams • Manage the Journal expense budget and related invoices • Troubleshoot print and digital edition issues with the publisher • Identify and develop new Journal content features • Collaborate with ad sales on advertiser-relevant content and new advertising opportunities • Create and oversee statements of work and contracts for editorial freelancers • Coordinate content project requirements, schedules, and payments • Help lead Publications department activities for the annual AORN Expo & Conference • Create and deliver presentations as needed • Assist the Editor-in-Chief in planning, implementing, evaluating, and improving AORN Journal editorial content • Perform other duties as assigned
• Bachelor’s degree required in Journalism, Publishing, or related field • Minimum of 6 years relevant publishing experience, including as a Journal managing editor • Demonstrated strong performance in writing, editing, and proofreading • Experience with project and team management • 1+ years of experience leading or managing a team • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel • Proficiency in professional Adobe software • Proficient in use of manuscript management systems • Strong attention to detail • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work efficiently under deadline pressure • Strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills • Ability to work collaboratively and independently • Excellent communication skills • Ability to cultivate positive relationships with AORN members, staff, and partners • Ability to demonstrate and hold others accountable for organizational values • Regular use of a computer, Microsoft Teams, and other business technology tools • Travel may be required to support departmental and Association activities
