📋 Description

• Work on young adult covers across all Random House Children’s Books imprints • Execute all phases of cover and jacket making from concept through final art, mechanicals, and prepress • Collaborate with art directors, publishers, and editors to develop covers and support publishing programs • Design covers and sales materials from concept to final art and print-ready PDFs • Research illustrators, designers, photographers, stock, and typography; present samples and pitch vision in meetings • Art direct illustrators, photographers, and freelance designers from concept and sketch development through revisions to final art • Prepare jacket and cover mechanicals for routing, approvals, and production according to printing standards • Track YA cover design trends and identify opportunities to set new trends • Develop cultural competence to represent marginalized backgrounds sensitively and authentically • Attend and participate in production, cover, team, and title-specific meetings • Participate in DEI initiatives • Support art directors and other designers with cover design as needed • Work on some interiors and/or middle-grade covers • Perform other related duties as assigned

🎯 Requirements

• 4+ years in a publishing or editorial design role • Strong knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop • At least basic understanding of Adobe Illustrator and Acrobat • Portfolio showcasing inventive book cover design and typography • Highly organized, able to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and manage time efficiently • Strong attention to detail, quality, and process • Willingness to take on responsibilities and ability to ask for support or help • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Desire to learn and work collaboratively • Deep interest in YA books • Preferred: Experience with pre-press, 1-color and 4-color printing processes, and PDF workflow • Preferred: Advanced retouching and/or photo composite skills • Preferred: Hand lettering skills • Preferred: Illustration skills • Preferred: Experience designing Young Adult covers • Preferred: Experience designing MG covers and/or interiors
