• Conduct legal research and analysis to support lawyers defending communities and the environment • Write legal research memos for partner lawyers, especially in Spanish • Contribute to pleadings and court submissions, including amicus curiae briefs • Meet with partner lawyers to learn about their work • Present and share research when needed • Build legal resources for ELAW’s website and other shared resources • Collaborate with ELAW lawyers and other team members to provide high-quality information to partners • Participate in committees and other activities to strengthen ELAW • Support administrative tasks • Manage multiple project types while balancing competing deadlines and priorities
• Exceptional legal research and writing skills in Spanish • At least good working knowledge of English • Recent law graduate; graduated from law school within the last five years • Familiarity with environmental justice and environmental law, including related human rights law • Experience researching court decisions from one or more Latin American countries • Commitment to ELAW’s mission and public-interest work • Ability to work successfully in cross-cultural settings • J.D. or equivalent law degree that is the basic educational qualification for applying for a license to practice in the relevant jurisdiction • Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction, or willing to apply for bar membership or fulfill requirements to practice law • 1–5 years of relevant legal experience; candidates with more than 5 years will not be considered • Exceptional legal research, writing, and communication skills • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines • Ability to represent ELAW positively in professional settings • Ability to work both independently and within a small team • Professional fluency in Spanish and good working knowledge of English • Legal work experience in Latin America • Willingness to use technology platforms for virtual collaboration • Flexible approach to working across time zones • Desired: additional language skills, especially Portuguese and/or English fluency • Desired: graduate degree in a relevant field if the law degree is an undergraduate degree • Desired: initiative to research emerging legal and advocacy issues • Desired: openness to international travel • Desired: strong editing skills • Desired: experience at public-interest law organizations • Desired: experience managing legal interns
