FAR. AI is a research and education non-profit organization focused on ensuring advanced artificial intelligence is safe and beneficial for everyone. It conducts technical research on robustness, deception, interpretability, and evaluation of frontier AI systems, runs events and workshops that convene academic and industry leaders, and operates programs (like FAR. Labs and grantmaking) to support researchers and build capacity in trustworthy AI. FAR. AI also publishes findings, provides training and policy-facing convenings, and collaborates with universities and agencies to advance secure, aligned AI.

📋 Description

• Own accounts, devices, identity and access management, onboarding and offboarding, the FAR.Labs office network, and daily IT support • Remediate known security gaps based on risk, including access controls, endpoint hardening, data protection, data governance, and vendor and application risk • Design self-serve infrastructure and processes with Business Operations and other teams to reduce manual work • Partner with leads across Research, Operations, Futures, and Communications to help teams work securely • Hire, manage, and develop an in-person IT Coordinator • Define and shape the IT and security team as the first team member • Communicate changes clearly, manage organizational change, and establish post-deployment feedback loops • Report to the COO and work closely with the Head of Research Acceleration, who owns research compute and cluster infrastructure

🎯 Requirements

• Owned IT and security at a technical organization of roughly 30 to 150 people, ideally as the first or sole person to do so • Comfortable in a terminal and able to code • Uses automation before manual processes • Experience redesigning systems to address root causes and eliminate recurring requests • Hands-on security work driven by threat models • Implemented and owned core identity and device infrastructure, including MDM and SSO • Fast and service-oriented • Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences • Uses LLMs regularly and has an opinion on where they help and where they do not • Experience or demonstrated curiosity about AI safety or security • Hired, managed, or mentored a junior teammate • Security engagement outside work, such as a home lab, capture-the-flag competitions, side projects, or security conferences • Experience obtaining SOC 2 Type 2 and complying with GDPR • Experience in startups, nimble nonprofits, or high-growth teams • Experience in a research organization, deep-tech startup, or similarly technical environment
