• Perform first-line, full-read copyediting of complex scientific peer review documents • Edit grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, formatting, and consistency • Apply AMA-based style guidance and program-specific editorial instructions • Make minimal, rule-based edits while preserving reviewer voice, scientific meaning, and intent • Flag or query issues outside editorial scope rather than rewriting beyond purview • Verify limited factual elements against source materials when instructed • Use Microsoft Word Track Changes and comment bubbles for transparent editing and issue communication • Work within a structured, high-volume workflow with sustained focus and consistent follow-through • Receive and apply editorial feedback across assignments • Communicate and collaborate within a fully remote editorial team supporting federally funded biomedical research programs • Work part-time, on-call based on project schedules, with occasional higher-volume periods • Provide at least 18 hours of editing time weekly during peak production periods, with workload potentially up to 40 hours per week
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, a science-related field, or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience • At least 1 year of relevant editing experience, or an appropriate combination of editing experience and education • Strong copyediting skills in grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and consistency • Familiarity with the AMA Manual of Style • Ability to follow detailed style guidance and program-specific instructions accurately • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, particularly Word and Outlook • Strong capability in SharePoint • Experience using Track Changes and comment-based workflows in Word • Strong written communication skills, including clear and concise editorial queries and comments • Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy across full reads of dense or repetitive material • Ability to manage time reliably and meet target levels of effort without sacrificing editorial quality • Availability for training and onboarding during initial ramp-up • Minimum 18 hours of editing time per week during peak production periods • Preferred: scientific, medical, technical, or grant-related editing experience • Preferred: experience editing high-stakes or sensitive documents • Preferred: structured editorial workflow, quality review, or regulated documentation experience • Preferred: limited source-document verification experience • Preferred: independent remote-work experience • Preferred: ability to learn and apply multiple rule sets quickly
