📋 Description

• Build and lead GiveWell’s legal function and serve as the organization’s primary legal decision-maker • Develop a calibrated legal strategy as GiveWell scales • Work closely with senior Operations leaders, executive leadership, and the Board • Maintain and improve GiveWell’s compliance posture across donations, grants, and multiple jurisdictions • Assess and mitigate risk across employment law, data privacy and security, programs and staff travel, intellectual property, contract management, and related areas • Provide strategic leadership and management for the Grants Administration function • Advise on complex or novel grant structures • Own contracting across grants, contributions, employment, software, independent contractors, and vendors • Build systems, processes, and controls for efficient operations • Modernize legal administration using technology and tools • Partner with Research, Outreach, Finance, People, and Tech • Provide prompt, clear, actionable internal legal guidance • Report to the COO and manage the Manager, Grants Admin

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience • Active state bar membership in good standing, preferably in California or New York • Experience building, leading, and coaching legal and other professional teams • Expertise in nonprofit and tax-exempt law, data privacy, contract negotiation, international corporate governance and expansion, and employment law • Prior success leading complex legal or compliance projects requiring cross-functional stakeholder engagement • Strong communication skills translating complex legal issues into clear, actionable guidance • Sound judgment and experience calibrating legal guidance to practical stakes • US-based applicant; GiveWell cannot sponsor visas • Preferred: experience in philanthropy, global health, or international development • Preferred: experience managing or partnering with grants administration, HR, or partnerships • Preferred: experience with international legal and regulatory environments • Preferred: experience with legal technology and self-service/automation tools • Preferred: experience working with or advising nonprofit boards
